June 26 is observed in many countries around the world as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 7, 1987, as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving the goal of creating an international society free from drug abuse.
But what do we know about drugs, and why are they so dangerous? Drug use is not merely a bad habit like smoking or excessive fast-food consumption. Drugs create addiction—a trap that ensnares people, destroying not only their physical and mental health but also their lives as a whole. The first use of a drug is often followed by continued use, as the brain quickly becomes accustomed to the intense stimulation caused by psychoactive substances. As a result, overcoming drug addiction is extremely difficult, and it becomes a source of problems not only for the individual but also for those around them.
The impact of drugs extends far beyond personal tragedy. It is associated with crime, broken families, and a lost future for entire generations.
In this regard, the psychiatry residents of KazNMU present a series of video clips highlighting the harmful effects of drug abuse.
