History of the Department

The Department of Cardiology at Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University (KazNMU) was established on September 1, 2019. The Head of the Department is Salim Fakhatuvich Berkinbayev, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Senior Consultant Cardiologist, and Senior Healthcare Organizer. The faculty of the Department of Cardiology at KazNMU includes the following members: Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Senior Consultant Cardiologist – Gulnara Aldeshovna Junusbekova Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Senior Consultant Cardiologist – Meiramgul Kapsimetovna Tundybayeva Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, PhD, Senior Consultant Cardiologist – Saule Zhaksylykovna Urazalina Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Senior Consultant Cardiologist – Zhanar Ongarbayevna Ibakova Assistant Professor, Academic Coordinator, Senior Consultant Cardiologist – Kamilya Maratovna Kedelbayeva Assistant Professor, Consultant Cardiologist (First Category) – Dariya Dzhambulovna Utebaliyeva, Assistant Professor, Cardiologist – Dilyara Mukhtarovna Mukhtarkhanova.

The faculty of the Department of Cardiology at Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University (KazNMU) possesses a high level of pedagogical, clinical, and scientific expertise. Of the 8 department staff members, 62.5% hold academic degrees (4 Doctors of Medical Sciences and Professors, 1 Candidate of Medical Sciences), and 100% hold professional qualification categories. The department’s clinical training sites include leading medical organizations in Almaty and across Kazakhstan: Research Institute of Cardiology and Internal Diseases (Director: Candidate of Medical Sciences, M.O. Pashimov), City Clinical Hospital No. 7 (Chief Physician: Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor M.E. Ramazanov), Private Clinic Almaty (General Director: O.Zh. Shulenbaev), Mediterra Center of Modern Medicine, Sema Hospital, Almaty. These clinical sites are equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and provide specialized and highly specialized inpatient and outpatient care, including cardiology (Research Institute of Cardiology and Internal Diseases) and multidisciplinary care (City Clinical Hospital No. 7, Private Clinic, Sema Hospital, Mediterra Center), serving the population of Almaty and Kazakhstan. Professors and associate professors provide consultative support to clinical sites, while assistant professors manage patient care and participate in clinical duties. The department’s primary research focus is the study of the clinical course and contributing factors in the development of complications of acute myocardial infarction during both early and late periods in residents of a modern metropolitan area (using Almaty as an example). The department also trains doctoral students and master’s students, and runs a scientific circle for residents. In 2019, the faculty received a scientific-educational grant titled “Improving Physicians’ Literacy in Treating Nicotine Dependence in Patients”, which included the development of educational and methodological materials and training primary care physicians to provide smoking cessation support to patients. The faculty actively integrates modern cardiovascular disease management into both educational programs and clinical practice. In 2019, 2022, and 2023, they developed national protocols for the diagnosis and treatment of arterial hypertension, chronic ischemic heart disease, prediabetes, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension. Scientific output includes 1 article published in a journal with an impact factor of 12 and 20 articles in journals recommended by the Committee for Control in the Field of Education and Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Department staff are members and leaders of the Association of Cardiologists of Kazakhstan, the Society of Specialists in Arterial Hypertension and Cardiovascular Prevention, and the Association of Therapists of Kazakhstan, as well as members of the European Society of Cardiology, the European Society of Hypertension, and the European Society of Preventive Cardiology. Between 2019 and 2023, the department, together with relevant professional associations, organized the following national and international scientific events: XI–XV Congress of Cardiologists of Kazakhstan (with international participation), VI Congress on Arterial Hypertension and Cardiovascular Prevention (with international participation), III Republican Scientific and Practical Conference on Antiplatelet and Antithrombotic Therapy (with international participation).
