Department History

The Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at Asfendiyarov KazNMU was established in 2019 under the leadership of Acting Head Dr. Tulebayeva Dina Bakytovna. In 2020, it was renamed the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Dr. Myrzabayeva Neilya Abdulayevna, PhD in Medicine, was appointed as Acting Head. From 2023 to 2024, the department was led by Associate Professor Zhanar Murzakalievna Andassova, PhD in Pedagogy. 15.10.2025, the department has been headed by Associate Professor Dr. Izbassarova Akmaral Shaimerdenovna.

The mission of the department is to train competitive specialists in the field of physical and rehabilitation medicine, and sports medicine, who are able to meet the needs of society in delivering medical care, to apply and advance cutting-edge innovative technologies in both practice and science, to utilize achievements in information and communication technologies, and to strengthen public health. The department offers residency training in “Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (Adult and Pediatric).” The goal of the residency program is to prepare physicians to work in rehabilitation departments of outpatient clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, to serve as educators in secondary and higher education institutions, as well as in non-governmental medical institutions and private practice. In collaboration with the Faculty of Postgraduate Education at KazNMU, the department also provides advanced training courses for practicing physicians.
